Day 2 in Nepal – Kathmandu Part I

Date: 14th September 2012

Previous post: Arriving in Kathmandu

We had our breakfast on the roof top. The roof top is the  popular relaxing place for most houses here.

Kathmandu is a city surrounded by mountain ranges. If it was a clear day, I would be able to see majestic mountain tops. Unfortunately it was a cloudy morning :(

There was no electricity that morning, hence we could not revise back our theoretical knowledge about Kathmandu.

I decided to call Mahes for some suggestion on where to visit. Since it was a strike day, (oh, strikes are common here) Mahes said he could not go to work, nor his daughter Niva to school. They would come to our hotel instead and take us for a city walkabout :)

At 10am sharp we got a call from the reception that we had guests (Mahes and Niva).

Before long, we found ourselves walking in the street :) !

The first stop was at a temple:

Next to the temple is the school Mahes went to, so we decided to have a pic of us taken there :)

Mahes told me there’s a huge prayer bell nearby that I should check out

Huge indeed and Niva enjoyed spinning it:

Huge and tall bell. The view of the ceiling:

We walked on:

Came across a couple of old temples, like this one:

and this:

Until we finally arrived at a  World Heritage Site, The Durbar Square:

One of the main attractions of the Royal Palace:

We had an extensive tour of the “palace turned museum”. We even went all the way up to the top most part of the tower in the above picture :)

It’s a huge complex, with some inner courtyards.

We rested for a while at the place of the  Hanuman (The monkey)

Mahes bought some corns and Niva enjoyed feeding the pigeons:

while Mahes cheekily chased them away!

… and I decided to give the place my signature jump ;)
