Ke Makam Bonda – Usman Awang

This is one of my favourite poems, by Usman Awang, also known as Tongkat Warrant.

At the age of 13, I enjoyed Malay literature so much that I wanted to go into literature stream instead of science stream after my LCE!

Kami mengunjungi pusara bonda
Sunyi pagi disinari suria
Wangi berseri puspa kemboja
Menyambut kami mewakili bonda

Tegak kami di makam sepi
Lalang-lalang tinggi berdiri
Dua nisan terkapar mati
Hanya papan dimakan bumi

Dalam kenangan kami melihat
Mesra kasih bonda menatap
Sedang lena dalam rahap
Dua tangan kaku berdakap

Bibir bonda bersih lesu
Pernah dulu mengucupi dahiku
Kini kurasakan kasihnya lagi
Meski jauh dibatasi bumi

Nisan batu kami tegakkan
Tiada lagi lalang memanjang
Ada doa kami pohonkan
Air mawar kami siramkan

Senyum kemboja mengantar kami
Meninggalkan makam sepi sendiri
Damailah bonda dalam pengabadian
Insan kerdil mengadap Tuhan

Begitu bakti kami berikan
Tiada sama bonda melahirkan
Kasih bonda tiada sempadan
Kemuncak murni kemuliaan insan

~Usman Awang

    Ezza,
I can a lot more about my interest in Malay literature, tapi tu lah… dah jadi history.. not following that much anymore. I read Ranjau Sepanjang Jalan when I was in Std 2! I dulu suka sangat novel Khatijah Hashim too – “Merpati Putih Terbang Lagi” *smile*
I used to hafal sajak2 Amir Hamzah too! And Sajak “Aku” by Chairil Anwar was my motivator when I was feeling down – still is!

    Old Fren,

I always believe that you do not need to regularly visit the makam to remember someone. It’s what is inside your heart thst matters. Tapi occasionally gi visit ok jugak, clear it from weeds etc..
